{"id":72532,"date":"2025-08-08T10:24:34","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T10:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=72532"},"modified":"2025-08-08T10:24:34","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T10:24:34","slug":"fcta-vows-to-ending-street-begging-in-abuja","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/08\/fcta-vows-to-ending-street-begging-in-abuja\/","title":{"rendered":"FCTA Vows to Ending Street Begging in Abuja"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has reaffirmed its commitment to the ongoing removal of child beggars from the streets of Abuja, describing it as a continuous and strategic effort to combat child exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Idris Yahaya, Director of Child Development at the FCTA Women Affairs Secretariat, made the announcement during a two-day training session on child protection case management organized by the FCT Chapter of the Child Protection Network (CPN).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Yahaya, a dedicated committee under the FCTA\u2019s Social and Welfare Department is actively monitoring street activities to identify and remove children being used for alms begging. He said many of the children pretend to have physical disabilities and are often relocated to their states of origin after rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFCT is seen as a land that belongs to everyone, so people troop in daily from neighboring states pretending to be deformed,\u201d Yahaya said. He warned residents against encouraging child labour and urged parents to prioritize the well-being of their children, emphasizing that children are vulnerable and dependent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yahaya also called for a review of the 2003 Child Rights Act, arguing that some of its provisions are outdated and inadequate for addressing current child protection challenges.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gbenga Adeleke, National Coordinator of the CPN in the FCT, echoed the call for stronger child protection efforts.
