{"id":72238,"date":"2025-08-06T06:24:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T06:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=72238"},"modified":"2025-08-06T06:24:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T06:24:07","slug":"wike-cant-reclaim-uniabuja-land-without-due-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/06\/wike-cant-reclaim-uniabuja-land-without-due-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Wike Can\u2019t Reclaim UniAbuja Land Without Due Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Olokuta Rofiat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Legal and academic experts say the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, cannot lawfully reclaim land allocated to the University of Abuja without due process.<\/p>\n<p>Wike recently proposed reducing the university\u2019s 11,800-hectare allocation to 4,000 hectares, citing encroachment and underutilization.<\/p>\n<p>But university authorities maintain the land was properly allocated by the federal government in 1988 and remains protected by law.<\/p>\n<p>Legal experts argue the minister lacks the power to unilaterally revoke land given to a federal institution without the consent of the university\u2019s Governing Council and approval from the Federal Executive Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe land is for public educational use and cannot be taken over through ministerial order,\u201d one lawyer said.<\/p>\n<p>The University Autonomy Act (2003) and existing court rulings affirm that land granted to federal universities cannot be repossessed without following federal procedures.<\/p>\n<p>As of press time, the FCT Administration had not clarified if such steps had been taken.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Olokuta Rofiat Legal and academic experts say the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, cannot lawfully reclaim land allocated to the University of Abuja without due process.
