{"id":72120,"date":"2025-08-05T14:54:03","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T14:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=72120"},"modified":"2025-08-05T14:54:03","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T14:54:03","slug":"labour-party-threatens-legal-action-over-amac-by-election-exclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/05\/labour-party-threatens-legal-action-over-amac-by-election-exclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour Party Threatens Legal Action Over AMAC By-Election Exclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Omoniyi David<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Labour Party (LP), has threatened legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over the exclusion of its candidates from the August 16 by-election in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).<\/p>\n<p>In an open letter titled \u201cRe: Exclusion of Labour Party Candidates from August 16 Bye-Elections\u201d, addressed to INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the party described the move as &#8220;unlawful and an abuse of power.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The letter was signed by Mr. Enu Kikanwa Timipre, LP\u2019s Legal Adviser in Bayelsa State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commission\u2019s role is to ensure compliance with the Electoral Act, not to dictate which parties can field candidates,\u201d Timipre said, expressing shock over INEC\u2019s decision, which he said was taken \u201cwithout prior notice or explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The party accused INEC of misinterpreting a Supreme Court judgment and interfering in its internal affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe INEC\u2019s actions are essentially an attempt to impose an illegal interpretation of the Supreme Court\u2019s judgment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The court\u2019s ruling did not empower INEC to meddle in the Labour Party\u2019s internal affairs,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>The LP demanded the immediate reinstatement of its candidates or a valid explanation for their exclusion, warning of legal consequences if the electoral body fails to act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf INEC fails to reverse its decision, it would not only undermine the electoral process but also imply that we should resort to other measures.<\/p>\n<p>However, as law-abiding citizens, we will explore legal avenues to ensure our candidates are rightfully on the ballot,\u201d Timipre added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Omoniyi David The Labour Party (LP), has threatened legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over the exclusion of its candidates from the August 16 by-election in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
