{"id":72002,"date":"2025-08-04T15:39:22","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T15:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=72002"},"modified":"2025-08-05T05:36:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T05:36:43","slug":"wike-accuses-abuja-elites-of-tax-evasion-acting-above-the-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/04\/wike-accuses-abuja-elites-of-tax-evasion-acting-above-the-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister Accuses Abuja Elites of Tax Evasion, Acting Above the Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused wealthy residents of Abuja of evading taxes and acting as though they are above the law.<\/p>\n<p>He made this known during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Monday, calling on Nigerians to pray for him daily as he tackles powerful interests resisting accountability.<\/p>\n<p>Wike expressed frustration over the attitude of influential individuals living and doing business in highbrow areas such as Maitama, Wuse, Garki, and the Central Business District, accusing them of deliberately avoiding their civic responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Minister, many of these elites project themselves as defenders of the poor while living in some of the most exclusive neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many poor people live in Maitama or Wuse?\u201d he asked. \u201cThe rich hire people to speak in the media as if they\u2019re representing the poor, but how many poor people own homes or businesses in these areas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized the critical role taxation plays in governance, noting that developed nations often treat tax evasion as a more serious offense than many crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Wike warned that despite the backlash, the FCT Administration would not back down on enforcing tax laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should be praying for people like us every day because of what we go through,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we make tough decisions, there\u2019s a lot of noise.
