{"id":71942,"date":"2025-08-04T05:58:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T05:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=71942"},"modified":"2025-08-04T05:58:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T05:58:24","slug":"cbn-reaffirms-stability-as-banks-undergo-recapitalisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/04\/cbn-reaffirms-stability-as-banks-undergo-recapitalisation\/","title":{"rendered":"CBN Reaffirms Stability as Banks Undergo Recapitalisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says Nigeria\u2019s banking sector remains stable as the ongoing recapitalisation drive progresses, with eight banks already meeting the new minimum capital requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The recapitalisation, introduced in March 2024 and set to end by March 2026, aims to strengthen banks to support a $1 trillion economy by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso said the move is essential, warning that Nigerian banks, in their current state, lack sufficient capital for such economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new policy, minimum capital requirements are \u20a6500bn for international banks, \u20a6200bn for national banks, and \u20a650bn for regional banks.<\/p>\n<p>Only paid-up capital and share premium now count toward this benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Cardoso noted that while many banks already have strong shareholders\u2019 funds, most will still need to raise fresh capital to meet the new definition.<\/p>\n<p>This, he said, will boost their capacity to support SMEs, innovation, and financial inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>CBN officials affirmed that the financial system is sound, with banks maintaining liquidity above the 30% regulatory minimum.<\/p>\n<p>The policy has also drawn support from bank executives, who view it as timely and essential for national development.<\/p>\n<p>The CBN has also fined 29 banks \u20a615bn for compliance violations and pledged stronger supervision and governance requirements starting 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0 The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says Nigeria\u2019s banking sector remains stable as the ongoing recapitalisation drive progresses, with eight banks already meeting the new minimum capital requirements.
