In an exclusive address, Nigeria’s former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, has issued a fervent plea to African leaders, urging them to elevate affordable housing to the forefront of their sustainable development agendas.<\/p>\n
Speaking through his representative, Professor Suleiman Bogoro, former Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), at the opening of the 19th Africa International Housing Show (AIHS), in Abuja on Tuesday, Gowon underscored the critical and pervasive challenge of inadequate housing across the continent.<\/p>\n
The event, convened by AIHS CEO Festus Adebayo and themed “Re-imagining Housing Through Innovation, Collaboration, and Policy,” served as the platform for Gowon’s impactful message.<\/p>\n
The elder statesman, who famously led Nigeria through its civil war, stressed that affordable housing isn’t just a comfort; it directly impacts public health, education, and economic productivity.<\/p>\n
Gowon emphatically stated it’s imperative for leaders to champion sustainable urban development and inclusive policies.<\/p>\n
He was quoted as saying that African governments must collaborate to ensure housing policies are not only effective but also equitable and inclusive.<\/p>\n
He further highlighted that innovation, investment, and diligent implementation are the linchpins to addressing the housing needs of Africa’s burgeoning population.<\/p>\n
Reinforcing Gowon’s concerns, Professor Jerry Gana, former Minister of Information and National Orientation, also present at the exclusive gathering, emphasized Nigeria’s ongoing struggle to make housing finance truly affordable for its citizens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
