They alleged persistent marginalisation by both the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc and other elements within the APC, despite their foundational role in the tripartite agreement that formed the national government in 2015.

Professor Vitalis Ajumbe, National Coordinator of the Association, who read their prepared text, emphasized that their position was the outcome of a crucial leadership meeting held just hours before the press conference. He highlighted that the CPC bloc had governed Nigeria for eight years, with the APC currently in power, yet the ANPP members feel sidelined.

A core demand from the aggrieved members is the sanctity of the Vice Presidential seat for the ANPP bloc in the 2027 Presidential election. Professor Ajumbe warned President Tinubu against tampering with this position, insisting that it “remains sacrosanct for the ANPP bloc as the second largest contributor to the formation of APC.” He added, “The ticket you are serving will be disappointed if you choose another person outside the ANPP block in APC as your vice President.”

The Association recounted the equitable sharing of interim leadership offices when the APC was formed, noting that the ANPP, with three serving governors at the time, was allocated the interim National Secretary position, while the ACN (with six governors) got National Chairman, and CPC (one governor) took National Treasurer. “We hoped for better days ahead in APC, but the reverse is now the case,” Ajumbe lamented.

He explicitly accused the immediate past administration of marginalising the ANPP bloc. “The ANPP bloc in APC, suffered serious political marginalisation/segregation under late General Muhammadu Buhari as our President for the 8 years of his reign,” Ajumbe alleged, describing Buhari’s treatment of them as “inhumane” given his political roots in the ANPP.

Ajumbe contrasted Buhari’s approach with President Tinubu’s “well-groomed” political background, arguing that if politics truly embodied equity, justice, and fair play, ANPP members, as the second-largest partner in the merger, should have been given sensitive political positions. He listed prominent politicians from the ANPP bloc, including current Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, Governors Professor Babagana Umara Zulum (Borno) and Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), and former governors and National Assembly members, asserting their significant contributions and experience.

The Association’s demands underscore a growing internal power struggle within the APC as the 2027 general election draws closer, highlighting the delicate balance of interests among the legacy parties that formed the ruling coalition.

By Salihu Mohammed Ahead of the 2027 general election, a significant bloc within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), comprising former members of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu, threatening to exit the party if certain conditions are not met.
