These schools operate independently of government control and are funded through various means, including school fees, individual donors, religious institutions, businesses, and charitable foundations.

Despite their rapid growth and significant role in education delivery, the Ministry noted that inconsistencies in curriculum implementation and entry age have prompted the need for a policy reset. The document acknowledged that private schools now play a substantial role in providing education in the country but emphasized that their varying standards must be aligned with the National Policy on Education (NPE).

According to the policy, the structure of Basic Education remains unchanged at nine years, consisting of six years of primary education and three years of junior secondary schooling. The policy stipulates that children should be admitted to Primary One at the age of six and complete six years of primary education before being admitted to JSS1 at around 12 years old.

As a result, learners who follow this new age-based progression will graduate from secondary school at 18 years old, which will become the new benchmark for eligibility into higher institutions across Nigeria. This move aims to standardize the education system and ensure that students meet specific age requirements before progressing to higher institution.

By Huldah Shado The Federal Ministry of Education has introduced a new policy that sets the minimum age for admission to Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) at 12 years old, following the completion of six years of primary education.
