This decisive action comes in response to the council&#8217;s failure to fully pay three months&#8217; minimum wage arrears to its staff.<\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"citation-48\">Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Kabi<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-48 citation-end-48\">, President of the FCT NULGE, stated that the closure was necessitated by the council&#8217;s inability to fully disburse funds that were released by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, specifically for these arrears.<\/span> <span class=\"citation-47 citation-end-47\">Kabi recalled that NULGE had suspended its initial three-month strike on July 14, 2025, following the minister\u2019s intervention and the subsequent release of funds for the payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly a few staff of the council and health workers received alerts from their banks, and these few staff were paid one month and some two months instead of the three months arrears directed by the minister,\u201d Kabi explained. He clarified that the closure serves as a stern warning to other area council chairmen who are yet to complete their outstanding payments.<\/p>\n<p>Affected staff members corroborated the union\u2019s claims, expressing frustration over the non-payment. <span class=\"citation-46 citation-end-46\">Mr. Zubairu Alhassan lamented, \u201cThe minister released the money for the payment of the new minimum wage arrears, but up till this moment, the majority of us have not been paid, while the only few staff that got were only paid one or two months instead of the three months directed by the minister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim Saleh, a health worker, also confirmed that he had yet to receive his arrears, despite reports of other area councils commencing payments to their health workers.<\/p>\n<p>Attempts to reach the Gwagwalada Area Council chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Jibrin Giri, for comment were unsuccessful as he was unavailable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samuel Adeola The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has ordered the immediate closure of the Gwagwalada Area Council secretariat, including all clinics and primary health centers, effective Thursday, July 24, 2025.
