President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, July 24, 2025<\/b>, arrived at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to preside over the 14th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This high-level gathering, which commenced around 2:08 pm at the State House Banquet Hall, saw the confirmation of <\/span>Professor Nentawe Yilwatda<\/span><\/b> as the new National Chairman of the party.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NEC meeting brought together top party stakeholders from across the country, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, all 24 APC governors, members of the National Working Committee (NWC), and several serving and former party leaders, notably former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.<\/p>\n

The meeting, originally slated for the APC national secretariat in Wuse II, Abuja, was relocated to the Presidential Villa due to what the party described as \u201clogistical reasons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A primary agenda item for the NEC was addressing the leadership vacuum created by the resignation of former National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, on June 27. Following deliberations, Professor Yilwatda, a former governorship candidate of the APC in Plateau State and currently the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, was unanimously endorsed by party leaders as the new substantive national chairman. His nomination is expected to be ratified at a full party convention.<\/p>\n

Other key issues high on the meeting’s agenda included preparations for the upcoming by-elections scheduled for August 16 across 16 federal and state constituencies in 12 states, as well as receiving a report from the Constitution Review Committee led by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, in a closed-door session, APC governors, under the banner of the Progressive Governors\u2019 Forum (PGF), met with President Tinubu to deliberate on party unity, zoning arrangements for the national chairmanship, and other pressing matters.<\/span> The leadership tussle had reportedly generated tension between stakeholders in the North-Central and North-West zones, a situation Yilwatda’s emergence from the North Central aims to resolve.<\/p>\n

A special session of the NEC was also dedicated to paying tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, marking the first official APC gathering since his passing on July 13.<\/p>\n

The 14th NEC meeting is widely regarded as a crucial moment for the ruling party as it recalibrates its structure and strategies ahead of significant political activities, including upcoming congresses, conventions, and the pivotal 2027 general elections.<\/span><\/p>\n
