This urban renewal initiative, modeled after the iconic Dubai City Walk, aims to transform the FCT’s landscape and boost its digital economy.

The agreement was signed on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, by the FCT Minister, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, who underscored the Administration’s commitment to attracting responsible foreign investment in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Abuja, Wike confirmed that the project’s building plan has received full approval and the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) has been issued, clearing the path for immediate commencement. The project is set to occupy approximately 200 hectares along the airport expressway.

“This agreement clearly defines our expectations. Anyone who has seen Dubai’s City Walk will understand the value such a project brings. We are ready to partner with serious investors willing to deliver,” Wike stated, emphasizing that the agreement includes strict timelines and revocation clauses to deter land speculation—a persistent issue in the FCT.

“We’ve had too many cases where land is given for development, only for it to be hoarded or resold. That ends now. This agreement includes provisions for revoking land if timelines are not met. The era of land speculation is over,” Wike declared.

Under the terms of the agreement, MAG International is expected to lay the foundation of the project within one month and complete a major segment by May 2026, coinciding with President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office.

“By August, the foundation must be in place, and by May next year, at least one key component of the City Walk must be completed. This timeline aligns with our goals for commemorating the President’s anniversary,” the Minister said.

Wike also addressed past bureaucratic hurdles, assuring that the FCTA has streamlined processes to fast-track development. He expressed confidence in MAG International’s capacity, citing an encouraging visit to the company’s offices. “They’ve shown seriousness. They’ve secured approvals and have their development plan in place. We expect them to hit the ground running,” he added.

Highlighting the broader vision, the Minister reiterated that the Renewed Hope Agenda extends beyond investment to generating jobs and revitalizing local economies. “President Tinubu has made it clear Nigeria is open for investment. The FCT is prepared to partner with credible investors to drive economic growth and urban renewal,” Wike affirmed.

In his remarks, Dr. Kassim Gidado, Executive Director of MAG International, lauded the FCT Minister for his support, which he said has significantly boosted investor confidence in the region. Dr. Gidado shared an optimistic vision for the project, stating that the Abuja City Walk would rival and potentially surpass global models such as Dubai City Walk and London’s Canary Wharf.

“We believe this project will completely transform the Lugbe axis, similar to the transformation seen in London with the development of Canary Wharf. What was once an area known for high crime is now one of the most expensive real estate zones in the world. We aim for the same kind of impact here,” he said. He expressed gratitude to the Minister for his leadership and faith in the consortium, adding that the partnership reflects a shared vision to elevate Abuja’s status as a global destination for business, leisure, and investment.

By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has sealed a landmark development agreement with MAG International Links Limited, an international consortium, to deliver the ambitious Abuja City Walk project.
