{"id":71362,"date":"2025-07-24T10:18:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T10:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=71362"},"modified":"2025-07-24T10:18:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T10:18:18","slug":"nis-intensifies-war-against-corruption-in-passport-processing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/07\/24\/nis-intensifies-war-against-corruption-in-passport-processing\/","title":{"rendered":"NIS Intensifies War Against Corruption in Passport Processing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onilede Titi Faith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"citation-26 citation-end-26\">The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to sweeping reforms and transparency, significantly stepping up efforts to stamp out corruption within its passport processing system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"citation-25\">Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-25\">, recently declared that the NIS has a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct or sabotage by any officer, particularly those engaged in <\/span><b><span class=\"citation-25\">extortion or irregularities<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-25 citation-end-25\"> related to passport issuance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The agency stated that this intensified crackdown is part of a wider reform initiative designed to rebuild public confidence in its services. Over the past year, the NIS has disciplined numerous officers. Currently, at least <b>80 personnel<\/b> are undergoing internal trials for various offenses, including bribery and extortion, while <b>eight have been dismissed<\/b> from service due to confirmed corruption cases.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"citation-24\">In response to increasing public complaints regarding delays and exploitation in the passport application process, the service has implemented a more transparent, <\/span><b><span class=\"citation-24\">digital-driven system<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-24 citation-end-24\">.<\/span> <span class=\"citation-23\">The ongoing <\/span><b><span class=\"citation-23\">Contactless Passport Application System<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-23 citation-end-23\"> aims to minimize human interaction and eliminate opportunities for racketeering.<\/span> Additionally, the NIS plans to roll out a <b>fully automated e-Visa platform by the end of 2025<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"citation-22\">To bolster these efforts, the NIS has launched the <\/span><b><span class=\"citation-22\">third phase of its Anti-Corruption Sensitisation Campaign<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-22 citation-end-22\"> in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).<\/span> This campaign targets not only internal staff but also external agents who collude with officials to defraud Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>The service has urged Nigerians to avoid middlemen and to submit their applications exclusively through official platforms.
