{"id":71347,"date":"2025-07-24T05:49:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T05:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=71347"},"modified":"2025-07-24T05:49:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T05:49:13","slug":"rainstorm-destroys-properties-farmlands-in-fct-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/07\/24\/rainstorm-destroys-properties-farmlands-in-fct-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Rainstorm Destroys Properties, Farmlands in FCT Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Patrick Idowu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heavy downpour from Monday night into the early hours of Tuesday has left a trail of destruction across Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), devastating homes, businesses, and farmlands.<\/p>\n<p>The rainstorm, which was accompanied by violent winds and flash floods, affected several rural settlements, with communities such as Gudaba, Kuchiyakwo, and Pegi bearing the brunt.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional bamboo-and-thatch structures, including bush bars and rustic restaurants, were flattened, displacing residents and disrupting livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>Local agriculture was particularly hit hard. Farmlands ripe for harvest , including maize, cassava, yam, and vegetables were submerged in water, destroying months of labour and investment.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hassan, a local farmer in the area, recounted his loss. \u201cMy first corn field was completely destroyed, and the remaining plot has been submerged. It\u2019s really frustrating because I depend heavily on this farm for my livelihood,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), in its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction, had earlier warned of above-average rainfall in the North Central region, including the FCT.<\/p>\n<p>The agency had cautioned that such rainfall patterns could result in localized flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage and uncontrolled development.<\/p>\n<p>Residents and community leaders are now calling on relevant government agencies for urgent intervention to assess the damage and provide relief to the affected families.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Patrick Idowu Heavy downpour from Monday night into the early hours of Tuesday has left a trail of destruction across Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), devastating homes, businesses, and farmlands.
