{"id":71252,"date":"2025-07-23T06:34:29","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T06:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=71252"},"modified":"2025-07-23T06:34:29","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T06:34:29","slug":"minister-assures-abuja-journalists-of-affordable-housing-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/07\/23\/minister-assures-abuja-journalists-of-affordable-housing-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister Assures Abuja Journalists of Affordable Housing, Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has assured journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), of the federal government\u2019s commitment to providing affordable housing through the long-anticipated \u201cJournalists\u2019 Village\u201d project.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council\u2019s Press Week Lecture and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday in Abuja, Dangiwa pledged unwavering support for media professionals.<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that concrete steps are being taken to make the housing estate a reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), through the Cooperative Housing Development Scheme, will be directed to secure land for the project,\u201d he stated, reaffirming that earlier engagements with the NUJ were more than ceremonial.<\/p>\n<p>Dangiwa tied the project to President Bola Tinubu\u2019s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the importance of the Renewed Hope Housing Programme and the National Urban Renewal Initiatives in expanding homeownership opportunities for Nigerians, including journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond housing, the minister advocated for stronger protections for media workers and sustainable funding for independent journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must ensure that every journalist feels safe, respected, and supported,\u201d he said, recognizing the critical role of the media in democracy, transparency, and accountability.<\/p>\n<p>Praising President Tinubu\u2019s commitment to press freedom and open governance, Dangiwa noted that journalists are vital in shaping public discourse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is better placed to tell our story than you, the journalists, editors, photographers, producers, and publishers who serve as the eyes and ears of the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also acknowledged the modern challenges journalists face, including misinformation, digital threats, and online harassment, especially targeting women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite global pressures, a vibrant, independent press remains essential for democracy,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in her remarks, NUJ FCT Council Chairperson, Grace Ike, identified the Journalists\u2019 Village as a key priority of her administration.<\/p>\n<p>She disclosed that the council is actively collaborating with the Housing Ministry and the FMBN to bring the project to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is simple: to provide decent, affordable homes for journalists and their families in the heart of the capital,\u201d Ike said.<\/p>\n<p>She also unveiled other projects under her leadership, including the modernization of the NUJ Congress Hall, procurement of a union bus, completion of the NUJ Pentagon Hall, and the launch of a journalists\u2019 welfare scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are not luxuries but critical investments in the future of journalism,\u201d she added, urging government bodies, media owners, and stakeholders to support these initiatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has assured journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), of the federal government\u2019s commitment to providing affordable housing through the long-anticipated \u201cJournalists\u2019 Village\u201d project.
