{"id":71075,"date":"2025-07-20T23:09:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T23:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=71075"},"modified":"2025-07-20T23:09:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T23:09:13","slug":"badenoch-decries-gender-bias-in-nigerian-citizenship-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/07\/20\/badenoch-decries-gender-bias-in-nigerian-citizenship-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Badenoch Decries Gender Bias in Nigerian Citizenship Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Adenike Lawal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, has criticised Nigeria\u2019s citizenship law, saying she cannot confer Nigerian nationality on her children because she is a woman.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on CNN\u2019s Fareed Zakaria GPS, Badenoch compared the UK\u2019s lenient immigration system with Nigeria\u2019s stricter stance.<\/p>\n<p>She said it was unfair that many Nigerians can easily gain British citizenship while Nigerian law makes it \u201cpractically impossible\u201d for women to pass on citizenship to children born abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigerians wouldn\u2019t tolerate this kind of thing in their own country,\u201d she said, opposing the idea of migrants forming \u201cmini-Nigerias\u201d in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Badenoch, who has three children with her Scottish husband, said the UK must tighten its naturalization process.<\/p>\n<p>However, her claim sparked controversy, as Section 25(1)(c) of the Nigerian Constitution allows either parent to confer citizenship on a child born outside Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Born in the UK in 1980 to Nigerian parents, Badenoch spent part of her childhood in Nigeria and returned to the UK at 16.<\/p>\n<p>She has served under Prime Ministers Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak and is known for her hardline immigration views.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adenike Lawal UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, has criticised Nigeria\u2019s citizenship law, saying she cannot confer Nigerian nationality on her children because she is a woman.
