The Creative Industry Group (CIG), a coalition of entertainers, has voiced profound concern about the surging participation of young people in illicit drugs, likening it to a pandemic that demands immediate intervention.<\/p>\n
In a statement released in Lagos, Mr. Felix Duke, the President of CIG, highlighted the pressing need to address this worrisome trend urgently. Duke underscored the group’s concern, especially as some of its members, including musicians and artists who are considered role models by the youth, have unfortunately been labeled as drug addicts.<\/p>\n
Duke clarified that while some entertainers may be involved in drug-related activities, it does not represent the entire industry. He acknowledged that the group is aware that some parents are complicit in the illicit drug trade and are accountable for their children’s addiction. Duke emphasized that some parents neglect to monitor their children’s activities and friends, who often serve as negative influences.<\/p>\n
Calling on parents and guardians to be vigilant, especially concerning children in primary and secondary schools, Duke announced the group’s stance: a resounding “No to drugs.”<\/p>\n
The president highlighted the need for a collective effort to combat the issue, stating that if left unchecked, the prevalence of illicit drugs among the youth could exacerbate Nigeria’s current crime levels.<\/p>\n
To address this concern, CIG plans to organize a conference where celebrities, government representatives, non-governmental organizations, security agencies, and students will unite against the dangers of illicit drugs among the youth. The conference, themed “All Hands Must Be on Deck,” is scheduled for November 28 at OJs, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
