The union acknowledged the compatibility of the government’s disposition with their union’s approach to alternative dispute resolution through constructive engagement, social dialogue, and proactive bargaining marked by mutual respect and openness to superior logic.

Despite the positive development, COEASU urged President Tinubu to address funding challenges in the College of Education system and the broader tertiary education sector. They called for a continued commitment to addressing labor issues through social dialogue and collective bargaining to ensure industrial harmony and an uninterrupted academic calendar.

The union also raised concerns about the centralization of payroll administration through the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), arguing that it undermines the statutory functions of governing councils and breaches the establishment integrity of the tertiary education sector. COEASU emphasized the need to address issues such as IPPIS, which they believe contravene global best practices in the management of tertiary institutions and disregard the unique characteristics of the College of Education system.

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) expressed appreciation on Monday to President Bola Tinubu for heeding the “voice of reasoning” and suspending the 40% deduction from internally generated revenues (IGR) of Federal Government-owned tertiary institutions.
