While some delegates completed their registration online, others were accredited in person on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The summit was originally scheduled to start yesterday but was postponed to honor former President Muhammadu Buhari and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, both of whom passed away on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Among the key figures at the summit is former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering is expected to reposition Nigeria&#8217;s constitutional democracy and address major concerns surrounding the 1999 Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The conference brings together respected Nigerians, including former presidents, governors, industry leaders, and activists to deliberate on and endorse a Draft Legislative Bill for a new constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, the product of nationwide consultations, will be presented to the Presidency and the National Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmed speakers include Professor Wole Soyinka, General T.Y. Danjuma, Professor Ango Abdullahi, General Ike Nwachukwu, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Femi Falana (SAN), Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Senator Aminu Tambuwal co-chair the Organising Committee, while Professor Mike Ozekhome (SAN), leads the Resolutions Committee.<\/p>\n<p>With the theme \u201cActualising a Constitutional Democracy That Works for All in Nigeria,\u201d the summit is advocating for a new legal framework that supports true federalism, protects minority rights, promotes justice, and empowers local governance.<\/p>\n<p>It will also tackle urgent national issues such as insecurity, youth unemployment, poor service delivery, and resource control.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers described the 1999 Constitution as outdated, overly centralized, and disconnected from Nigeria\u2019s diverse realities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis summit is not just another political jamboree; it is a serious national call to action,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Olawale Okunniyi, head of the Joint Secretariat, urged all stakeholders, including government officials, political actors, civil society, and the media to participate and support this critical step toward a fairer, more inclusive Nigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samuel Adeola &nbsp; A major constitutional conference aimed at drafting a new constitution for Nigeria begins today at 10:00 a.m. in Abuja.
