{"id":70678,"date":"2025-07-15T20:20:43","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T20:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=70678"},"modified":"2025-07-15T20:20:43","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T20:20:43","slug":"south-west-nma-caucus-threatens-strike-over-poor-allowance-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/07\/15\/south-west-nma-caucus-threatens-strike-over-poor-allowance-review\/","title":{"rendered":"South West NMA Caucus Threatens Strike Over Poor Allowance Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The South West Caucus of the Nigerian Medical Association NMA has threatened to embark on industrial action if the Federal Government fails to withdraw what it described as unfavourable and demoralizing adjustments to doctors\u2019 allowances.<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference held Tuesday in Osogbo, the caucus, which comprises NMA chapters in Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun, and Ondo states, rejected a new circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission NSIWC.<\/p>\n<p>They argued that the circular reflects poorly conceived policies that undermine the welfare of medical professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Adeshina Fasanu, Chairman of the caucus and Osun State NMA Chairman, said the circular fails to reflect the current economic realities in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled that the national body of the NMA had already given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to reverse the policy.<\/p>\n<p>The caucus is demanding immediate correction of what it called inconsequential adjustments to doctors\u2019 remuneration, insisting on adherence to the Collective Bargaining Agreements of 2001, 2009, and 2014.<\/p>\n<p>They are also calling for full disbursement of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund MRTF and a comprehensive review of the fund to reflect prevailing economic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>They insist on full implementation of the 2021 hazard allowance agreement and enforcement of the revised retirement age for medical and dental professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Olumuyiwa Alonge, Ondo State NMA Chairman, faulted the Federal Government for failing to engage stakeholders before announcing the new allowance structure.<\/p>\n<p>He said in a country where one doctor attends to as many as 10000 patients, what is needed is motivation, not disincentives.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ifedayo Oreyemi, Ekiti State NMA Chairman, revealed that about 2000 Nigerian doctors leave the country annually in search of better working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that the trend will only worsen if doctors\u2019 welfare is not taken seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Luqman Ogunjimi, Ogun State NMA Chairman, described the NSIWC circular as another move capable of demoralizing already overworked and underpaid doctors.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, Dr Happy Adedapo, Oyo State NMA Chairman, said the proposed allowances are insignificant when compared to the soaring inflation affecting all Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>He called on the government to be more responsive to the plight of healthcare workers.<\/p>\n<p>The caucus reaffirmed its loyalty to the national leadership of the NMA and warned that if their demands are not met, it would convene an emergency meeting to decide the next line of action, which may include a coordinated strike across the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata &nbsp; The South West Caucus of the Nigerian Medical Association NMA has threatened to embark on industrial action if the Federal Government fails to withdraw what it described as unfavourable and demoralizing adjustments to doctors\u2019 allowances.
