{"id":70589,"date":"2025-07-14T21:05:42","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T21:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=70589"},"modified":"2025-07-14T21:05:42","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T21:05:42","slug":"experts-renew-call-for-urgent-un-reforms-warn-of-rising-global-instability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/07\/14\/experts-renew-call-for-urgent-un-reforms-warn-of-rising-global-instability\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts Renew Call for Urgent UN Reforms, Warn of Rising Global Instability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Omoniyi David<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Global peace advocates and diplomats have renewed calls for urgent reforms at the United Nations to ensure a more democratic and inclusive global order.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The call came at the weekend during the launch of Towards Effective World Security, a new book by Nigerian international affairs analyst, Uchenna Nwankwo, held in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chairing the event, veteran columnist Owei Lakemfa warned that the world was heading toward instability due to growing global power imbalances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In his keynote address titled Nigeria: Flying Blindly in the Global Space, he criticized the UN\u2019s veto system for violating the principle of equal sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust weeks ago, the world tilted toward a global conflagration,\u201d Lakemfa said. \u201cWe are drifting toward a unipolar world where diplomacy is reduced to dogma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He also lamented Nigeria\u2019s weakened diplomatic presence, saying the country is \u201clike a bird flying with one wing\u201d due to its failure to appoint ambassadors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Vanguard publisher Sam Amuka, represented by Northern Editor Soni Daniel, praised Nwankwo\u2019s work for offering practical ideas to inspire world leaders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout peace in Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and elsewhere, even the big powers won\u2019t sleep,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Author Uchenna Nwankwo traced his passion for global peace back to childhood and urged renewed unity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UN is tottering and risks going the way of the League of Nations,\u201d he said. \u201cThis book is about safeguarding nations through reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Literary critic Uzor Maxim Uzoatu, in his review, endorsed Nwankwo\u2019s call for a new World Assembly to replace the current UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He proposed a representative system based on population, economic strength, and sovereign equality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Philippines Ambassador to Nigeria, Mersole Mellejor, described the book launch as timely, reaffirming his country\u2019s support for UN reforms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UN has delivered 75 years of general peace, but it must become more representative,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The event drew diplomats, scholars, and journalists, all united in calling for a reimagined global system that prioritizes justice, equity, and shared security.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Omoniyi David &nbsp;
