The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) wing of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has issued a stern warning of its intent to secede from NUPENG. The threat is contingent upon the resignations of NUPENG’s National President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Olawale Afolabi.<\/p>\n

Expressing dissatisfaction with the leadership of NUPENG, PTD members staged nationwide protests symbolized by placing plant leaves in front of their trucks. The drivers cautioned both NUPENG and the police against interference and the alleged continuous harassment of their leaders.<\/p>\n

The core of their discontent revolves around the claim that Akporeha lacks the requisite competence to lead the union, given his purported non-membership in the oil union. The protesters contend that Akporeha was a cook in an oil company from the formal sector, dismissed while serving as the national treasurer of NUPENG. They further assert that he was subsequently maneuvered into the Petrol Station Workers Union of NUPENG to facilitate his candidacy for the NUPENG presidency.<\/p>\n

The protesting tanker drivers argue that such a departure from NUPENG’s constitution renders Akporeha unfit for the presidency. They accuse him of orchestrating the placement of surrogates to siphon the union’s revenue for personal benefit.<\/p>\n

In a strong show of solidarity, the tanker drivers affirm their support for Lucky Osusan and Dayyab Garaga, individuals they perceive to have sacrificed for their collective liberation.<\/p>\n

Responding to these allegations, NUPENG’s General Secretary, Olawale Afolabi, dismissed the claims as false. He countered that the faction issuing the statement does not represent PTD members and emphasized that the leaders of this faction have been arrested and detained at Kuje prison in Abuja following an attack on NUPENG leaders.
