Unbeknownst to her, the vehicle was operated by a ‘one-chance’ gang.

He recounted that the attackers blindfolded and beat her, forcing her to unlock her phone and bank application. However, Freda; who had lost her ATM card weeks earlier and was not tech-savvy was unable to meet their demands.

Even after offering to call her employer to transfer the N10 million the robbers demanded, they refused and threatened to mutilate her and sell her body parts.

She was eventually dumped near the Moshood Abiola National Stadium around 11 p.m. Badly wounded, she struggled to get help as several cars drove past.

A vigilante member later came to her rescue and rushed her to the National Hospital, Abuja.

Medical reports revealed she suffered broken ribs, severe internal bleeding, trauma to her lungs, kidneys, heart, and eyes. Despite the efforts of doctors, Freda succumbed to her injuries a few days later.

Her death has been widely condemned, with the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), mourning her as a symbol of the deepening security crisis in the nation’s capital.

In a statement, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said: “This God-fearing, generous soul was known to us at HURIWA since our founding 18 years ago… The details of her encounter are a heartbreaking reminder of the urgency for government intervention to root out these terrorists in disguise.”

Onwubiko called on security agencies; the police, DSS, and military to intensify surveillance in Abuja and revisit the long-abandoned CCTV project across the city.

“Installing CCTV and operating a functional monitoring and rapid response system is far more urgent than constructing flyovers all over Abuja, as politicians are currently prioritizing,” he said.

HURIWA also advocated for a real-time driver and vehicle verification system that would allow commuters to confirm the identity of drivers before boarding commercial vehicles.

“Freda must not die in vain. Her killers must be found and brought to justice. Too many families have silently buried loved ones who fell victim to the same fate. It’s time to demand real change,” Onwubiko added.

By Samuel Adeola The tragic death of Miss Freda Arnong, a Ghanaian national, has sparked renewed concerns over growing insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, particularly the menace of the notorious ‘one-chance’ robbery syndicates.
