{"id":69375,"date":"2025-07-01T08:57:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T08:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=69375"},"modified":"2025-07-01T08:57:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T08:57:16","slug":"fct-elders-urge-wike-council-chairmen-to-end-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/07\/01\/fct-elders-urge-wike-council-chairmen-to-end-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"FCT Elders Urge Wike, Council Chairmen to End Strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Samuel Adeola<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Senior citizens in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), under the aegis of the FCT Senior Citizens Forum, have called on the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and the six area council chairmen to immediately resolve the ongoing strike that has crippled primary education and healthcare services across the territory for over three months.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Forum\u2019s Coordinator, Elder Danjuma Tanko Dara, described the situation as a \u201cmonumental failure of governance,\u201d warning that the shutdown of essential services has plunged the capital into a \u201cstate of social emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe simultaneous collapse of our primary schools and healthcare centres represents a double tragedy for our society,\u201d Dara lamented. \u201cWhile our children are left to roam the streets instead of learning in classrooms, the sick and vulnerable are being denied basic medical care. This is not the Abuja we envisioned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 14th week, the strike began due to the failure of the area councils to implement the N70,000 national minimum wage and pay outstanding salaries owed to teachers and primary healthcare workers since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The senior citizens urged Minister Wike to intervene decisively. \u201cThe Honourable Minister must rise to this occasion,\u201d Dara said. \u201cWe know his reputation as a man of action.
