{"id":69241,"date":"2025-06-28T21:28:38","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T21:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=69241"},"modified":"2025-06-28T21:28:38","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T21:28:38","slug":"14-chinese-nationals-jailed-for-cyber-terrorism-internet-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/06\/28\/14-chinese-nationals-jailed-for-cyber-terrorism-internet-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"14 Chinese Nationals Jailed for Cyber-Terrorism, Internet Fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen Chinese nationals have been convicted and sentenced by the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The convicts; Su Zong Gen, Li Zhong Chang, Chen Gui Ping, Li Xiang Long, San Feng Zhang, Jia Yang, Jia Zhi Hao, Liu Chuang, Yu Hai Ging, Zhao Xiao Liang, Dai Li, Tao Kun, Mao Bu Yi, and Zhao Zi Cheng, were part of a cybercrime syndicate busted in a sting operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on December 19, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement on the EFCC\u2019s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the suspects were among 792 individuals arrested for alleged cryptocurrency investment and romance scams targeting Nigerian citizens.<\/p>\n<p>They were arraigned before Justice Daniel Osiagor on separate charges bordering on cyber-terrorism and internet fraud. One of the charges read:<br \/>\n\u201cThat you, Su Zong Gen, sometime in December 2024 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, willfully caused access to a computer system for the purpose of destabilising and destroying the economy and social structure of Nigeria&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initially pleading not guilty, all 14 defendants later changed their plea to guilty.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution team, led by T.J. Banjo and M.S. Owede, urged the court to convict the accused accordingly, a request that was not opposed by the defence.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Osiagor sentenced each defendant to one year imprisonment with an option of a \u20a61 million fine.<\/p>\n<p>He also ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service to deport all 14 convicts within seven days of completing their sentence or paying the fine.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, all items recovered from the convicts were forfeited to the Federal Government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata &nbsp; Fourteen Chinese nationals have been convicted and sentenced by the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud.
