Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, disclosed this during a press briefing in Umuahia on Tuesday, highlighting the legislative strides made under his leadership.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Assembly has focused on enacting people-centered laws that promote institutional reform, participatory governance, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>Among the notable laws passed are the Abia State Appropriation Law, 2023, the Greater Aba Development Authority Law, 2024, the Abia State Pensions Reform Law, 2024, the Abia State Security Trust Fund Law, 2024, the Abia State Electricity Law, 2025, the Abia State Senior Citizens Law, 2025, and the Abia State Local Government Administration Law, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are committed to enacting legislation that responds to the needs of our people,\u201d Emeruwa said. \u201cIn May, we had a historic moment when 18 bills were assented to in one day; a first in Abia\u2019s legislative history, and possibly in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He credited the Assembly\u2019s achievements to the unity and cooperation among lawmakers, as well as a smooth working relationship with the executive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe governor has assented to all the bills passed, making them fully enforceable. I believe the issue in Nigeria is not the absence of laws but their implementation,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting key legislative efforts, Emeruwa noted that the Abia State Electricity Law empowers the state to regulate and develop its own electricity market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis law positions Abia to attract investors who can establish independent power companies and stations, thereby driving industrialization,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>He also underscored the significance of the Senior Citizens Law, which guarantees monthly stipends, free healthcare, and other welfare benefits for Abia residents aged 60 and above.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re one of the few states that have passed such a progressive law,\u201d the Speaker said.<\/p>\n<p>Emeruwa concluded by reiterating the Assembly\u2019s dedication to oversight, representation, and making laws that truly serve the people of Abia State.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata The Abia State House of Assembly has announced the passage of 37 bills within the first two years of the eighth Assembly, inaugurated in 2023.
