{"id":68888,"date":"2025-06-24T08:37:44","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T08:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=68888"},"modified":"2025-06-24T08:37:44","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T08:37:44","slug":"nerc-raises-concerns-as-seven-states-take-over-electricity-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/06\/24\/nerc-raises-concerns-as-seven-states-take-over-electricity-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"NERC Raises Concerns as Seven States Take Over Electricity Regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Huldah Shado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has expressed caution over the readiness of states to independently manage electricity markets, following the transfer of regulatory control to seven states in line with the Electricity Act 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Enugu, Ondo, Ekiti, Imo, Oyo, Edo, and Kogi states have officially taken over regulation of their electricity markets, a major shift from the previously centralized system.<\/p>\n<p>The new Act, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, decentralizes electricity governance, allowing states to generate, transmit, distribute, and regulate power within their jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>More states, including Lagos, Ogun, Niger, and Plateau, are expected to complete their transition between June and September 2025, while Anambra has already passed its own electricity law and is preparing to join.<\/p>\n<p>While stakeholders have welcomed the move as a step toward improved efficiency, increased competition, and private sector participation, some NERC officials are concerned about state capacity to handle the complexities of power regulation.<\/p>\n<p>A senior NERC official, who spoke anonymously, cautioned that states may struggle to manage critical regulatory functions, particularly in tariff setting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot many people in the country can set electricity tariffs correctly.
