{"id":68771,"date":"2025-06-23T06:01:38","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T06:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=68771"},"modified":"2025-06-23T06:01:38","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T06:01:38","slug":"expert-warns-of-looming-disease-outbreak-in-fct-slums-over-poor-sanitation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/06\/23\/expert-warns-of-looming-disease-outbreak-in-fct-slums-over-poor-sanitation\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert Warns of Looming Disease Outbreak in FCT Slums Over Poor Sanitation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Omoniyi David<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An environmental expert has raised concerns over the poor sanitary conditions in slum communities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warning of an impending disease outbreak if urgent steps are not taken by the FCT Administration.<\/p>\n<p>The expert called on the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, to urgently intervene, noting that an estimated 60 percent of Abuja\u2019s population resides in these underserved neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>He recommended that the FCT Administration revisit and implement its original Abuja Master Plan, which outlined critical infrastructure development for satellite towns.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that these facilities should have been in place before the current surge in population, to prevent the deteriorating living conditions now witnessed.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with journalists, the District Head of Mpape in Bwari Area Council, Musa El-Fada, lamented the dire conditions faced by his people.<\/p>\n<p>He described Mpape as a densely populated community, housing construction workers and middle-income earners, and a major source of stones and plaster sand for building projects across Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Mpape\u2019s proximity to the city centre and its contribution to the capital&#8217;s construction sector, El-Fada said the area continues to suffer from neglect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are suffering. There\u2019s no access to potable water or good roads. Residents rely on privately owned boreholes, and when there\u2019s a power outage, we buy water from trucks, locally called Meruwa at \u20a62,000 per truck,\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n<p>He added that while Mpape has a small health centre, it is grossly inadequate for the growing population, with no general hospital to cater to critical health needs.<\/p>\n<p>El-Fada acknowledged that Mpape is not captured in the Abuja Master Plan but insisted that its large population and strategic location demand urgent government attention and basic infrastructure development.<\/p>\n<p>The expert and community leaders alike have urged authorities to take swift action to avoid a major public health crisis in the nation&#8217;s capital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Omoniyi David An environmental expert has raised concerns over the poor sanitary conditions in slum communities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warning of an impending disease outbreak if urgent steps are not taken by the FCT Administration.
