{"id":68715,"date":"2025-06-22T04:18:21","date_gmt":"2025-06-22T04:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=68715"},"modified":"2025-06-22T04:18:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-22T04:18:21","slug":"striking-council-workers-cripple-healthcare-in-bwari-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/06\/22\/striking-council-workers-cripple-healthcare-in-bwari-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Striking Council Workers Cripple Healthcare in Bwari Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Primary healthcare services in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have been brought to a halt as a three-month strike by council workers continues to bite hard, leaving residents without access to essential medical care.<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing industrial action, led by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), has shut down public primary schools and health centres across the six area councils of the FCT.<\/p>\n<p>The strike, which began in March, is in protest over the non-implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and other entitlements.<\/p>\n<p>Residents who spoke to 21st Century Chronicle over the weekend in Bwari expressed deep frustration over the impact of the strike, particularly on healthcare access and education.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Liyatu Adamu, a mother of two, lamented the economic and health strain the situation has placed on her family. \u201cMy children have been sick for over two weeks, and we can\u2019t access the Primary Health Centre.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can\u2019t afford private hospitals, and even the cost of buying drugs from pharmacies is overwhelming,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Another resident, Luka Ango, a civil servant, warned of a looming health crisis. \u201cEssential services like antenatal care, immunisation and deliveries have been suspended.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This could lead to unnecessary deaths and worsen health conditions in our community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Ruth Aboyi, a teacher, described the disruption as \u201cdisheartening,\u201d especially for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension who rely on steady access to medication and care.<\/p>\n<p>NULGE Chairman in Bwari, Emmanuel Ishaku, confirmed that efforts to resolve the matter with council authorities have failed.<\/p>\n<p>He disclosed that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT chapter, has written to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, issuing a seven-day ultimatum to act.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that if no concrete step is taken, the union may picket the minister\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>As the strike drags on, communities continue to grapple with deepening hardship, and calls for urgent government intervention grow louder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0 Primary healthcare services in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have been brought to a halt as a three-month strike by council workers continues to bite hard, leaving residents without access to essential medical care.
