Pope Leo XIV has raised fresh concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on the mental and intellectual development of young people, cautioning that overexposure to AI-generated content could distort their understanding of reality.<\/p>\n

In a written address to participants at the second Rome Conference on Artificial Intelligence on Friday, the pontiff, who holds a degree in mathematics, said society must take seriously the long-term neurological effects of AI use among children and youth.<\/p>\n

“All of us are concerned for children and young people, and the possible consequences of the use of AI on their intellectual and neurological development,” he said. \u201cNo generation has ever had such quick access to the amount of information now available through AI. But access to data – however extensive, must not be confused with intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

While acknowledging AI\u2019s potential to support breakthroughs in healthcare and scientific research, the pope warned that its widespread use raises difficult questions about humanity\u2019s ability to interpret reality and maintain critical thinking.<\/p>\n

The warning comes amid growing concern about deep fake technology, particularly after multiple AI-generated videos and audio clips impersonating the pope recently circulated on platforms like YouTube and TikTok.<\/p>\n

An AFP investigation earlier this month uncovered dozens of such videos being misrepresented as genuine messages from the pope in English and Spanish.<\/p>\n

A recent survey by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that a rising number of young people are turning to AI-powered chatbots for news, prompting worries over accuracy, reliability and the erosion of traditional journalism.<\/p>\n

The Catholic Church, under Pope Leo\u2019s predecessor, Pope Francis, has been proactive in engaging with the ethical implications of AI.<\/p>\n

In 2020, the Vatican launched the Rome Call for AI Ethics, a global framework signed by Microsoft, IBM, the United Nations, the Italian government and leading academic institutions.<\/p>\n

The agreement advocates for transparency, human dignity and privacy in the development and deployment of AI technologies.<\/p>\n
