Fr. Patrick Alumuku, respected Catholic priest and elder statesman from Benue State, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently investigate and address the ongoing killings in Benue, warning that continued violence in Nigeria’s agricultural heartland could lead to national collapse.

In an emotional interview, Fr. Alumuku described the bloodshed in Benue as “lamentable and unacceptable,” stressing that despite repeated attacks on villages and farming communities, no one in authority has offered clear explanations or actionable solutions.

“Who is doing the massacre in Benue?” he asked pointedly. “No one is telling the truth about what is happening. The silence is dangerous. The government must stop treating these killings as normal.”

Fr Alumuku lamented that the attacks, mostly targeting agrarian communities, are crippling Nigeria’s food security and damaging the country’s unity.

“Benue is the Food Basket of the Nation. If you destabilize it, you cripple the entire country,” he said.

He further expressed concern over the fragmentation within communities, a growing lack of unity, and the absence of collective efforts to find solutions.

“We are more united when we are abroad than when we are at home,” he observed, urging Nigerians to show the same communal spirit they often display in diaspora.

Commenting on the broader insecurity across the country, he added: “It’s only God that is helping us. People are tired. No one wants to invest in security anymore. Everyone feels alone.”

Fr Alumuku called for attitudinal change, greater unity among citizens, and strategic engagement of the youth.

He also encouraged the wealthy and influential members of the community to return home and support local development, describing their absence as a huge loss.

“This is the time to call our people back, not just physically, but emotionally and socially.

“We must rebuild trust, unity, and purpose. Nigeria cannot afford to ignore what is happening in Benue,” he said.

Fr Alumuku concluded with a heartfelt appeal to national and community leaders to act swiftly, warning that silence in the face of crisis is not just complicity, but betrayal.

…Killings lamentable, unacceptable …No one is telling the truth about what is happening …Destabilizing Nigeria’s Food Basket is crippling the nation By Samson Adeyanju Rev.
