{"id":68472,"date":"2025-06-18T15:48:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T15:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=68472"},"modified":"2025-06-18T15:48:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T15:48:16","slug":"ghana-cuts-power-to-state-institutions-over-unpaid-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/06\/18\/ghana-cuts-power-to-state-institutions-over-unpaid-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana Cuts Power to State Institutions Over Unpaid Bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Anifowoshe Oladipupo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ghana\u2019s state electricity distributor has disconnected power to several key public institutions over mounting unpaid bills, totaling tens of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) cut supply to Ghana Water Limited\u2019s Weija treatment plant in Accra over an outstanding debt of $97 million.<\/p>\n<p>The company also disconnected the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), citing arrears of $305,000 after the media house failed to honor a payment plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a step we take lightly, but these are long-standing arrears,\u201d said Ishmael Tetteh Oku, ECG\u2019s acting general manager of operations. \u201cWe cannot continue to supply power for free while facing our own financial challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ECG issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the waterworks to clear its debts or face prolonged disconnection.<\/p>\n<p>The Weija plant supplies nearly 80 percent of Accra and surrounding areas, and past disruptions have triggered severe water shortages across more than 30 communities.<\/p>\n<p>The power cuts threaten to impact small businesses that rely on water, including restaurants and car wash operators.<\/p>\n<p>ECG said the disconnections are part of a broader campaign to recover revenue and reduce financial losses, despite the disruption to essential services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Anifowoshe Oladipupo &nbsp; Ghana\u2019s state electricity distributor has disconnected power to several key public institutions over mounting unpaid bills, totaling tens of millions of dollars.
