In a surprising but strategic move, President Donald Trump has granted TikTok a third 90-day extension, delaying a ban on the Chinese-owned social media platform that was originally set to take effect just before his January 2025 inauguration.<\/p>\n

The White House confirmed the latest reprieve on Tuesday, signaling a notable shift in the administration\u2019s stance on the video-sharing app.<\/p>\n

For years, Trump pushed for TikTok\u2019s ban or forced sale to a U.S.-controlled entity, citing national security concerns over its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.<\/p>\n

However, in a marked reversal, the president has recently taken a more favorable view, pointing to TikTok’s influence on youth voter turnout during the 2024 presidential election; a demographic that played a crucial role in his return to office.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump has always made clear that he doesn\u2019t want TikTok to disappear from Americans\u2019 phones,\u201d said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. \u201cThis 90-day extension is a window for finalizing a deal that ensures American users\u2019 data remains protected while allowing the platform to continue operating.\u201d<\/p>\n

The decision comes on the heels of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in January 2025, which upheld legislation mandating either the sale or banning of TikTok in the U.S., effective the day before Trump took office.<\/p>\n

Despite the ruling, Trump has opted for a more pragmatic path, balancing political strategy with ongoing negotiations.<\/p>\n

This latest extension follows two previous delays: an initial 75-day grace period upon taking office and a second extension through mid-June.<\/p>\n

The third delay suggests behind-the-scenes progress, with ByteDance reportedly in talks with U.S. investors, including Oracle and Blackstone to create a new, American-controlled TikTok entity.<\/p>\n

The proposed deal would significantly reduce Chinese ownership and potentially relocate TikTok\u2019s U.S. operations.<\/p>\n

However, major obstacles remain, especially regarding TikTok\u2019s coveted recommendation algorithm. Analysts warn that separating the platform from its proprietary technology could severely weaken its performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cTikTok without its algorithm is like Harry Potter without his wand,\u201d said Forrester analyst Kelsey Chickering, highlighting the algorithm\u2019s vital role.<\/p>\n

The geopolitical stakes are high. Once known mainly for dance challenges and viral memes, TikTok has become a flashpoint in the escalating digital power rivalry between the U.S. and China.<\/p>\n

\u201cTikTok has become a symbol of the global tech cold war,\u201d noted Shweta Singh, a professor at Warwick Business School.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, TikTok is forging ahead. Just this week, the company launched a suite of AI-powered tools called \u201cSymphony,\u201d designed to help advertisers easily transform text and images into dynamic video content.<\/p>\n

While TikTok\u2019s future in the U.S. remains uncertain, the platform is clearly not retreating.
