With the 2027 general election still two years away, a brewing controversy over an alleged plan to drop Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu\u2019s running mate has sparked division within the All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n

Tensions flared on Sunday during a meeting of APC North-East stakeholders held at the International Conference Centre in Gombe.<\/p>\n

What began as a forum to reaffirm support for President Tinubu\u2019s second-term ambition quickly descended into chaos, culminating in a violent outburst.<\/p>\n

The incident was triggered after the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, concluded his speech without acknowledging Vice President Shettima as part of the proposed 2027 joint ticket.<\/p>\n

His omission drew immediate backlash from delegates, some of whom accused him of scheming to sideline the Vice President.<\/p>\n

A viral video from the event showed an enraged delegate striking Salihu with a chair, while another hurled a black plastic bucket at him as he attempted to flee the stage.<\/p>\n

The scene quickly spiraled out of control, with delegates loudly chanting \u201cShettima! Shettima!! Shettima!!!\u201d in protest.<\/p>\n

Salihu had stated during his remarks: \u201cWe have no business not supporting this party with all the juicy appointments and responsibilities given to us by this government.<\/p>\n

I want all members of the zonal executive committee to stand up so that we will do the proper endorsement, because it is the zonal executive committee that holds the ticket.<\/p>\n

We want to reaffirm and adopt the endorsement earlier done by the National Working Committee that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is endorsed as the sole candidate for the 2027 election.\u201d<\/p>\n

His failure to mention Shettima in the endorsement drew sharp condemnation from party members, particularly delegates from Borno State, the Vice President\u2019s home base.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an insult to the entire region that our own son, the Vice President, was not even mentioned.<\/p>\n

“This is a calculated attempt to sideline Shettima, and we will resist it with everything we have,\u201d fumed a visibly angry Borno delegate.<\/p>\n

Efforts by Deputy National Chairman (North), Alhaji Bukar Dalori, to calm the aggrieved delegates proved futile.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, prior to the chaos, the governors of the three APC-controlled North-East states; Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Babagana Zulum (Borno), and host Governor Muhammadu Yahaya (Gombe), had all declared support for the Tinubu-Shettima ticket in their separate addresses.<\/p>\n
