{"id":68040,"date":"2025-06-14T10:18:39","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T10:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=68040"},"modified":"2025-06-14T10:18:39","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T10:18:39","slug":"kebbi-begins-drainage-clearance-to-avert-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/06\/14\/kebbi-begins-drainage-clearance-to-avert-flooding\/","title":{"rendered":"Kebbi Begins Drainage Clearance to Avert Flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Kebbi State Government has commenced the evacuation and clearance of drainage systems across key areas of the state to mitigate the risk of flooding ahead of the rainy season.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Friday by the Commissioner for Urban Development, Hayatu Bawa, in a statement issued to journalists in Birnin Kebbi.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bawa, the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the free flow of rainwater by removing waste and other blockages from drainage channels.<\/p>\n<p>He said the initiative is aimed at preventing the overflow that often results in flooding, particularly in residential communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have already begun clearing drains to allow water to flow freely during the rainy season. The intention is to prevent the devastating effects of flooding,\u201d the commissioner said.<\/p>\n<p>He commended Governor Nasir Idris for approving the project and for providing the financial and logistical support needed to facilitate smooth operations.<\/p>\n<p>Bawa also warned residents against building on waterways and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, stressing that such actions contribute significantly to flooding.<\/p>\n<p>He further advised people living in flood-prone areas to consider relocating to safer, upland locations to protect lives and property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clearing of drains remains one of the most effective ways of preventing flood disasters, and we urge the public to cooperate with government efforts,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The state government reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising environmental safety and protecting citizens from the dangers of seasonal flooding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Ebere &nbsp; The Kebbi State Government has commenced the evacuation and clearance of drainage systems across key areas of the state to mitigate the risk of flooding ahead of the rainy season.
