{"id":68006,"date":"2025-06-13T16:14:14","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T16:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=68006"},"modified":"2025-06-13T16:14:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T16:14:14","slug":"kanus-broadcasts-incited-violence-paralyzed-south-east-economy-dss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/06\/13\/kanus-broadcasts-incited-violence-paralyzed-south-east-economy-dss\/","title":{"rendered":"Kanu\u2019s Broadcasts Incited Violence, Paralyzed South-East Economy -DSS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Anifowoshe Oladipupo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Department of State Services (DSS), told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday that broadcasts by the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, directly contributed to economic paralysis in the South-East region.<\/p>\n<p>Testifying before Justice James Omotosho, the fourth prosecution witness, a DSS operative identified as Mr DDD (for security reasons), alleged that Kanu\u2019s broadcasts incited the enforcement of IPOB\u2019s sit-at-home orders through its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my investigation, the defendant\u2019s broadcasts directly contributed to economic paralysis in the South-East, as they fuelled the enforcement of IPOB\u2019s sit-at-home order,\u201d Mr DDD stated during his testimony.<\/p>\n<p>He further alleged that Kanu smuggled a radio transmitter into Nigeria, concealing it within household items to evade detection by customs officials.<\/p>\n<p>According to the witness, the device-undeclared to the Nigeria Customs Service was hidden in the Ihiala, Anambra State home of one Benjamin Madubougu.<\/p>\n<p>Mr DDD said the transmitter was used to incite violence and spread secessionist propaganda. \u201cThe defendant used the radio to incite members of the public against the Federal Government,\u201d he said. \u201cWe obtained a search warrant, searched Benjamin\u2019s residence, and recovered the transmitter along with other items, including firearms, cartridges, Biafran currency, and Indian hemp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court admitted into evidence a certified true copy of the search warrant issued by the Ihiala Chief Magistrate Court on October 28, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>A video showing Kanu inspecting the smuggled transmitter was also played in court and admitted into evidence, despite objections from the defence, led by Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN).<\/p>\n<p>In the video, Kanu was seen praising the transmitter as a \u201cgame changer\u201d and referring to it as a \u201cnuclear weapon\u201d for Biafra.<\/p>\n<p>He also issued a threat, warning South-East residents not to defy IPOB\u2019s sit-at-home order scheduled for May 31, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution also tendered a flash drive containing 18 video clips and 16 radio broadcasts allegedly made by Kanu. The court admitted them into evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the prosecution presented a statement from Benjamin Madubougu, in which he admitted that Kanu did not provide any customs documentation for the imported transmitter.<\/p>\n<p>A publication from Vanguard newspaper was also submitted, quoting an alleged ESN member who claimed that Kanu had ordered the collection of 2,000 human heads for burial rites, although only 30 were reportedly gathered.<\/p>\n<p>Despite objections from the defence, the article was admitted alongside a certificate of compliance.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution then applied for the court to inspect the container housing the transmitter and related items, currently in custody at the DSS facility in the Presidential Villa.
