The Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Minna, Most Rev. Dr. Luka Sylvester Gopep, on Thursday led a high-powered Catholic delegation to Mokwa community in Niger State, in a strong show of solidarity following the devastating flash flood that struck the area on May 29, 2025.<\/p>\n
The visit was marked by the donation of food items, clothing, and relief materials worth millions of naira to survivors and displaced families.<\/p>\n
Addressing community leaders and victims during the visit, Bishop Gopep emphasized that the Catholic Church’s gesture extended beyond the Diocese of Minna, representing the concern and compassion of the global Catholic community.<\/p>\n
He assured the people of Mokwa that more Catholic agencies would be visiting in the coming days to provide additional support and humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are here not just as Minna Diocese but as representatives of the entire Catholic Church.<\/p>\n
“This is a mission of solidarity, compassion, and hope,\u201d Bishop Gopep said.<\/p>\n
The bishop also appealed to government authorities to prioritize the resettlement of displaced persons, stressing the need to avoid relocating them back to the flood-prone area.<\/p>\n
Receiving the Catholic delegation, the Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, the Secretary of Mokwa Local Government Area, and the Emir (Nda Lele), of Mokwa expressed deep appreciation for the Church\u2019s timely intervention.<\/p>\n
The Emir disclosed that the community had so far recorded 224 deaths, with several persons still missing.<\/p>\n
He praised the Catholic Church for its longstanding peaceful presence in Mokwa and lauded the current relief efforts as a true expression of faith in action.<\/p>\n
