{"id":67346,"date":"2025-06-05T03:53:56","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T03:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=67346"},"modified":"2025-06-05T03:53:56","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T03:53:56","slug":"tinubu-commissions-180mw-afam-ii-power-plant-in-rivers-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/06\/05\/tinubu-commissions-180mw-afam-ii-power-plant-in-rivers-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu Commissions 180MW Afam II Power Plant in Rivers State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Samuel Adeola<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially inaugurated the 180MW Afam II Power Plant in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, a major power project completed by Sahara Power Group (SPG), and Crescendough Nigeria Limited (CNL).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking virtually during the commissioning on Wednesday, Tinubu described the plant as a significant step in boosting Nigeria\u2019s energy supply and economic development.<\/p>\n<p>He praised the project as a product of Nigerian resilience, collaboration, and renewed hope, adding that the 180MW added to the national grid will help power homes, industries, and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>He commended the Rivers State Government for supporting the project and also hailed the private sector partners; Sahara Power Group, First Independent Power Limited, and Crescendough Nigeria Limited for their investments and technical input.<\/p>\n<p>The Afam II plant, which was completed in just 16 months, was delivered mainly by local professionals.<\/p>\n<p>It is now fully operational and expected to support job creation, industrial growth, and improved energy access across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Group Managing Director of Sahara Power, Kola Adesina, said the project is more than just adding 180MW to the grid; it is about impact, transforming lives, and promoting sustainable energy.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that Sahara Power contributes over 20 percent of Nigeria\u2019s power through Egbin Power and First Independent Power, powering over 50 million homes and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Adesina also revealed ongoing expansion plans at Egbin Power (the largest private thermal plant in sub Saharan Africa), upgrades at Ikeja Electric, technology driven improvements at First Independent Power, and new investments in renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Rivers State Sole Administrator, Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, applauded the speedy completion of the plant, saying it proves that indigenous companies can deliver big results.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the project demonstrates confidence in Rivers as a hub for large scale investments.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, described the project as a key achievement and a sign of what can be achieved through public private partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, also pledged to work with the power sector to solve gas supply challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Adesina appreciated the Presidency, Federal Ministry of Power, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and Afam host communities for their support in bringing the project to life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samuel Adeola President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially inaugurated the 180MW Afam II Power Plant in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, a major power project completed by Sahara Power Group (SPG), and Crescendough Nigeria Limited (CNL).
