This follows the success of 53 operational daughter stations and more than $500 million in sectoral investments over the past year.

According to PCNGI Programme Director and Chief Executive, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, the initiative has recorded remarkable progress since its launch in May 2024.

“From just 11 stations and 4,000 vehicles, we’ve now surpassed 50,000 CNG vehicles on the road, with projections to hit 100,000 before year-end,” he said.

He noted that the surge in demand has drawn massive private and public sector investments, with companies like AY Shafa, Femadec, Greenville, NNPCL, Bovas, and NIPCO leading infrastructure development across major cities and underserved areas.

The PCNGI is backing the activation of 24 additional sites within six to nine months, with several already operational, including Ilorin.

Other cities set to go live soon include Port Harcourt, Abuja, Ado Ekiti, Lokoja, Aba, and Enugu.

Oluwagbemi acknowledged early skepticism toward the initiative but said perceptions have shifted due to increased awareness and economic incentives.

“There were doubts, but one year on, even the skeptics are convinced. Nigerians love CNG. The programme is working,” he declared.

He emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s directive to promote sustainable transportation, attract investment into alternative energy, and coordinate regulation for rapid sector growth.

He disclosed that AY Shafa and Femadec recently commissioned two new daughter stations in Abuja, with plans to establish nine and 21 additional stations respectively. Femadec is also spearheading the development of CNG ecosystems across 20 Nigerian universities.

In Yola, Greenville is rolling out 51 liquefied CNG stations across northern and southeastern Nigeria, including hard-to-reach areas.

Meanwhile, NNPCL is adding eight new stations to its existing 12 and finalizing 40 of 100 stations under its Phase 2 expansion plan.

Bovas is set to launch two stations in Ibadan as part of an eight-station rollout, while NIPCO plans to complete eight new stations within six months, adding to the 23 already in operation.

The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund has awarded equity investments to 10 new CNG-focused gas projects, building on its ₦123 billion investment in 2023, four of which were directed to the sub-sector.

So far, the initiative has resulted in over 10,000 direct jobs, the establishment of 255 vehicle conversion centers, and a rapidly growing national CNG ecosystem.

Oluwagbemi called for continued patience, noting, “It took over 70 years for Nigerians to adopt petrol and diesel. We cannot expect to switch to CNG in seven months. Engineering feats take time. Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

He reaffirmed the PCNGI’s commitment to delivering President Tinubu’s promise of affordable and cleaner energy for all Nigerians.

By Patrick Idowu The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), is accelerating Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy with the rollout of over 175 new compressed natural gas (CNG), refueling stations nationwide.
