The Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) submitted the list, which is now under the NJC’s scrutiny before being forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for final appointment, pending Senate confirmation.

According to reports from various news platforms, including Channels Television, the FJSC sent the list to the NJC, marking a crucial step in the appointment of judges for federal courts. The 11 nominees selected by the NJC will contribute to completing the Supreme Court’s full complement of 21 justices, as the court currently has 10 justices.

The FJSC’s meticulous process involves interested candidates obtaining recommendation letters from justices and relevant officials in the justice sector. These candidates then submit their applications to the FJSC, which reviews eligibility based on professional records and geographical zones of origin. The FJSC conducts interviews to further narrow down the list of nominees, sending a double number of nominees to the NJC compared to the available vacancies.

The current list from the FJSC comprises 22 judges from the Court of Appeal, all vying for elevation to the Supreme Court bench. These nominees come from different geopolitical zones of the country, with varying numbers reflecting the representation on the Supreme Court bench. Notably, the South-east and North-central zones, currently unrepresented on the bench, have the highest number of nominees, each with six.

The nominees, identified as priority candidates, have their reserve candidates listed alongside them. While the priority candidates are likely to make the NJC’s final list for recommendation to the President, the reserve candidates serve as quick replacements if needed.

The distribution of nominees across regions is as follows:

South-east: 6 nominees

South-south: 2 nominees

South-west: 2 nominees

North-central: 6 nominees

North-east: 2 nominees

North-west: 4 nominees

The NJC’s decision on the final 11 nominees will shape the composition of the Supreme Court bench, ensuring representation from all geopolitical zones and contributing to the establishment of a complete and effective judiciary.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) is currently in the process of selecting 11 deserving candidates from a list of 22 nominees to fill the 11 vacant openings on the Supreme Court bench.
