{"id":66988,"date":"2025-05-31T12:23:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-31T12:23:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=66988"},"modified":"2025-05-31T12:23:44","modified_gmt":"2025-05-31T12:23:44","slug":"fg-opens-first-motor-park-cng-centre-targets-cheaper-transport-fares","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/05\/31\/fg-opens-first-motor-park-cng-centre-targets-cheaper-transport-fares\/","title":{"rendered":"FG Opens First Motor Park CNG Centre, Targets Cheaper Transport Fares"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Patrick Idowu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a major step toward reducing energy costs and public transport fares, the Federal Government on Thursday launched the first-ever Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), vehicle conversion centre located inside a motor park, at Mile 2 in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The centre, inaugurated under the Presidential CNG Initiative (P-CNGi), is aimed at making CNG conversion more accessible for commercial drivers and reducing their fuel costs by over 90%, according to the Programme Director\/Chief Executive, Michael Oluwagbemi.<\/p>\n<p>He said the initiative could ultimately lead to a 40% reduction in transportation fares for commuters as more vehicles adopt the CNG system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a strategic move to decentralise conversion centres by bringing them directly to where the drivers are,\u201d Oluwagbemi noted. \u201cIt\u2019s the first of many such centres we\u2019ll roll out across all local governments in Lagos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government is offering the conversions free of charge to commercial operators and plans to enforce fare reductions once significant adoption is achieved in parks like Mile 2.<\/p>\n<p>Partnerships with groups like the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) will ensure implementation.<\/p>\n<p>To meet the expected rise in gas demand, Oluwagbemi revealed that NNPC Limited will deploy 100 new CNG refueling stations over the next 18 to 24 months, with private firms such as NIPCO, Bovas, and Greenville also investing in infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is also creating employment, with over 10,000 jobs generated and 132 conversion centres participating in the Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Training (TVET) programme.<\/p>\n<p>A national awareness campaign is set to begin in the second half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Lagos NURTW Secretary, Usman Teslim, described the development as \u201ctimely and pragmatic,\u201d praising the government\u2019s effort to ease the burden on transport operators and commuters alike.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Patrick Idowu &nbsp; In a major step toward reducing energy costs and public transport fares, the Federal Government on Thursday launched the first-ever Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), vehicle conversion centre located inside a motor park, at Mile 2 in Lagos.
