{"id":66071,"date":"2025-05-20T06:15:27","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T06:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=66071"},"modified":"2025-05-20T06:15:27","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T06:15:27","slug":"obi-rejects-vp-talk-says-coalition-is-about-nigerians-not-positions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/05\/20\/obi-rejects-vp-talk-says-coalition-is-about-nigerians-not-positions\/","title":{"rendered":"Obi Rejects VP Talk, Says Coalition Is About Nigerians, Not Positions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Labour Party\u2019s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has distanced himself from rumours of a power-sharing deal with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections, declaring that his focus is on rescuing Nigerians from poverty and bad governance\u2014not on political titles.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Abuja on Monday during the launch of a N20 million donation to support a school and hospital project by the Anglican Church in Kubwa, Obi said he is committed to building a coalition that addresses hunger, ill health, and illiteracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in a coalition against hunger, a coalition against poverty and ill health,\u201d Obi said. \u201cPolitics for me is not about positions; it is about doing the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to reports that he had agreed to serve as Atiku\u2019s running mate with a promise that the former Vice President would serve only one term, Obi declined to confirm or deny such claims.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he reiterated that his engagement in the political space is driven by national interest and people-focused governance.<\/p>\n<p>Obi\u2019s position was reinforced by the Obidient Movement, which dismissed the reports as baseless.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement by its Director of Strategic Communications, Nana Kazaure, the group said the story was \u201cimaginary\u201d and cautioned against sensationalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no truth or basis to the reports,\u201d Kazaure stated. \u201cPeter Obi remains committed to building a united front against bad governance and remains in the Labour Party unless he declares otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Atiku\u2019s media aide, Paul Ibe, confirmed ongoing coalition talks but withheld details, saying opposition leaders are \u201ckeeping their cards close to their chest\u201d as discussions continue.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the emerging coalition\u2019s framework, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is updating its constitution to allow immediate integration of new members.<\/p>\n<p>Its National Chairman, Ralph Okey Nwosu, announced his decision to step aside for fresh leadership as the party prepares for a national convention.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance is seen as a strategic push by opposition leaders to unseat the ruling APC in 2027\u2014but for Obi, the real mission is about national rescue, not political bargains.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0 Labour Party\u2019s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has distanced himself from rumours of a power-sharing deal with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections, declaring that his focus is on rescuing Nigerians from poverty and bad governance\u2014not on political titles.
