{"id":66030,"date":"2025-05-19T14:09:28","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T14:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=66030"},"modified":"2025-05-19T14:09:28","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T14:09:28","slug":"lagos-bans-single-use-plastics-starting-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/05\/19\/lagos-bans-single-use-plastics-starting-july\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos Bans Single-Use Plastics Starting July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Samuel Adeola<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos State Government has declared a full ban on single use plastics beginning July 1, 2025, marking a bold step in its fight against environmental degradation.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement timeline during a meeting with representatives of Tetra Pak West Africa at the Alausa Secretariat.<\/p>\n<p>Wahab said the government had already eliminated single use plastics from its operations and expected all businesses and individuals to follow suit. \u201cThis is not a sudden move,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe announced the phase-out last year when we banned Styrofoam food packs. Now, we are enforcing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that producers must take full responsibility for their packaging materials, in line with global best practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will no longer tolerate practices that pollute our city and endanger public health,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Tetra Pak West Africa&#8217;s Managing Director, Haithem Debbiche, welcomed the policy, pledging the company\u2019s support and collaboration toward sustainable packaging solutions.<\/p>\n<p>With this ban, Lagos joins global cities taking concrete action against plastic pollution, setting a strong example for other Nigerian states to follow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samuel Adeola The Lagos State Government has declared a full ban on single use plastics beginning July 1, 2025, marking a bold step in its fight against environmental degradation.
