{"id":65863,"date":"2025-05-17T04:13:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T04:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=65863"},"modified":"2025-05-17T04:13:32","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T04:13:32","slug":"eleven-years-without-trial-nyanya-bomb-blast-suspect-cries-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/05\/17\/eleven-years-without-trial-nyanya-bomb-blast-suspect-cries-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Eleven Years Without Trial: Nyanya Bomb Blast Suspect Cries Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Patrick Idowu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, the alleged mastermind of the deadly April 2014 Nyanya Motor Park bombing that killed 75 people, has protested the prolonged delay in his trial, accusing the federal government of abandoning the case.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking through his lawyer, Abdusalam Abas, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Ogwuche said the terrorism case has suffered 97 adjournments in eleven years, mostly due to flimsy excuses by the prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the court to strike out the seven-count charge for want of diligent prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>Joined by his co-defendants and their respective lawyers, Ogwuche asked Justice Peter Lifu to invoke Section 351 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act to dismiss the case.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants lamented being kept in detention by the Department of State Services without access to adequate legal consultation.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Lifu, clearly displeased, condemned the consistent failure of the Federal Ministry of Justice to prosecute the case despite earlier warnings. \u201cThis charge has been pending since December 2014.<\/p>\n<p>It defies logic and undermines the principle of presumption of innocence and fundamental human rights,\u201d the judge stated.<\/p>\n<p>Although he refrained from striking out the case due to its sensitive nature, Justice Lifu issued a final warning, granting the prosecution until June 18 and 19, 2025, to present its witnesses or risk having the charge dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>He also directed the DSS to grant the defendants access to their lawyers, family members and selected friends in preparation for their defense.<\/p>\n<p>Ogwuche and six others are facing charges ranging from conspiracy and terrorism to membership of Boko Haram, failure to report planned attacks, and providing financial support to the group\u2019s widows.<\/p>\n<p>They allegedly plotted attacks at high-profile locations including the Silverbird Galleria.<\/p>\n<p>Ogwuche, a native of Benue State, was extradited from Sudan in 2014 to face prosecution.
