{"id":65670,"date":"2025-05-13T09:20:18","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T09:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=65670"},"modified":"2025-05-14T05:21:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T05:21:26","slug":"wike-hits-area-councils-in-abuja-where-it-hurts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/05\/13\/wike-hits-area-councils-in-abuja-where-it-hurts\/","title":{"rendered":"Wike Hits Area Councils Hurting Jabs in Abuja"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Patrick Idowu<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the withholding of ten percent of statutory allocations to all six area councils in Abuja over their failure to fully meet the demands of striking primary school teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The teachers have been on strike over unpaid allowances and the delayed implementation of the new national minimum wage of seventy thousand naira, despite council chairmen confirming partial payment last week.<\/p>\n<p>Visibly frustrated, Wike said the continued strike was unacceptable and embarrassing, especially after he directed the release of funds to the councils to settle the wage issue.<\/p>\n<p>He faulted the chairmen for allowing the dispute to disrupt children&#8217;s education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot sack them because they are elected, but I will not fold my arms,\u201d Wike said, justifying his decision to block a portion of their Internally Generated Revenue.<\/p>\n<p>He announced plans to set up a committee to pay teachers directly as funds become available.<\/p>\n<p>Rejecting claims of overstepping local government autonomy, Wike insisted his actions were necessary to safeguard the rights of teachers and the future of schoolchildren in the FCT.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Patrick Idowu FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the withholding of ten percent of statutory allocations to all six area councils in Abuja over their failure to fully meet the demands of striking primary school teachers.
