{"id":65219,"date":"2025-05-03T01:26:33","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T01:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=65219"},"modified":"2025-05-03T01:26:33","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T01:26:33","slug":"meta-threatens-exit-over-hefty-fines-tough-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/05\/03\/meta-threatens-exit-over-hefty-fines-tough-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta Threatens Exit Over Hefty Fines, Tough Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ifeoluwa Odunayo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tech giant Meta has warned it may pull Facebook and Instagram out of Nigeria, citing mounting regulatory pressures and over 290 million dollars in fines imposed by the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>In court documents filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Meta said it is considering shutting down both platforms to avoid enforcement actions after failing to overturn the sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>The penalties include 220 million dollars from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission for alleged anti-competitive behavior, 37.5 million dollars from the advertising regulator for unapproved content, and 32.8 million dollars from the Nigeria Data Protection Commission for privacy breaches.<\/p>\n<p>Meta described the NDPC\u2019s demand to seek approval before transferring data out of Nigeria as unworkable.<\/p>\n<p>It also raised concerns over a requirement to produce government approved educational content on data privacy, calling it impractical.<\/p>\n<p>With a court-imposed deadline of June end to comply, the fate of Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria now hangs in the balance.
