Still, the breach is a reminder to stay vigilant in protecting personal information.

Here’s what you should do to stay protected:

1. Be Wary of Suspicious Messages
Scammers may take advantage of the news to send fake texts, emails, or make calls pretending to be from MTN. Never share your bank details, passwords, or one-time passwords (OTPs). Only respond to messages from verified MTN channels.

2. Monitor Your Accounts Closely
Check your MyMTN App, MTN wallet, or any linked bank accounts for unusual activity, such as unexplained deductions or transactions. Report any suspicious behavior to MTN’s customer care immediately.

3. Update Your Passwords
If you use your MTN number for other services or apps, change those passwords now. Create strong, unique passwords for each account and avoid reusing the same one across multiple platforms.

4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Activate 2FA wherever possible. It adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a verification code in addition to your password.

5. Expect Official Updates
MTN has assured it will directly contact affected customers. Always verify that messages are from official MTN sources before taking action.

6. Report Suspected Data Misuse
If you suspect your data has been misused, notify MTN and also contact the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) for further guidance.

While MTN maintains that the situation is under control, it’s wise to remain cautious. As cyberattacks grow more frequent, safeguarding your personal information is just as important as protecting your finances.

Stay alert. Stay safe.

By Ifeoluwa Odunayo MTN, one of Africa’s largest telecom providers, has confirmed a cyberattack on its systems.
