{"id":64376,"date":"2025-04-17T04:15:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T04:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=64376"},"modified":"2025-04-17T05:13:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T05:13:55","slug":"avoid-buying-plate-numbers-from-agbero-drts-warns-fct-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/04\/17\/avoid-buying-plate-numbers-from-agbero-drts-warns-fct-residents\/","title":{"rendered":"Fake Vehicle Plate Number Racketeering Thrives in Abuja Amid Scarcity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ifeoluwa Odunayo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Directorate of Road Traffic Services has cautioned residents of the Federal Capital Territory to steer clear of street touts, popularly known as agbero, who are fraudulently issuing vehicle plate numbers amid a temporary scarcity.<\/p>\n<p>The Director, Dr Abdulateef Bello, sounded the alarm on Wednesday following rising cases of unsuspecting motorists being duped by fraudsters impersonating DRTS officials.<\/p>\n<p>He advised residents to use only the official self-service portal at https:\/\/selfservice.fctevreg.com for all vehicle registration and licensing processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have observed with concern that fraudsters are taking advantage of the current supply gap to deceive people,\u201d Bello said. \u201cThey parade themselves as DRTS agents, but they are not. Anyone who patronizes them does so at great personal risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Bello assured that the directorate is working to resolve the plate number shortage and warned that those caught impersonating officials or patronizing them will face the law.<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged the public to report suspicious activities and stressed that only transactions done through approved channels are valid and secure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t let desperation lead you into trouble.
