NASU has cautioned that any bias in favor of ASUU could spark widespread industrial action and plunge Nigerian universities into fresh turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with the Universities and Inter University Centres Trade Group Council, NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, did not mince words as he criticised what he described as a pattern of lopsided allocation.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that the government must tread carefully to avoid igniting tensions that could once again paralyze academic activities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyemi shed light on the historical injustices endured by non academic staff, recalling how past disbursements heavily favored academic unions.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that in previous allocations, academic staff reportedly received up to 70 percent of the funds, leaving just 20 percent for the three non teaching unions. According to him, such imbalances were at the heart of the prolonged strike that crippled the university system in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>He further reminded stakeholders of an agreement reached in August 2022, where the government pledged to release the sum of N50 billion to settle earned allowances for all university workers.<\/p>\n<p>However, NASU fears that recent developments suggest the government may be reneging on its promise of equitable sharing.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyemi urged the government to honour its commitments to all university workers, warning that sidelining non academic staff could provoke a new wave of protests and industrial actions capable of disrupting academic calendars across the country.<\/p>\n<p>As tensions simmer, all eyes are now on the government to ensure transparency and fairness in handling the contentious allowance, as the fate of Nigeria&#8217;s university system once again hangs in the balance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adenike Lawal The Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions has raised alarm over an alleged secret deal between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities regarding the distribution of the N50 billion earned allowance.
