Nigeria has stepped up its fight against a deadly meningitis outbreak with the arrival of over one million doses of the lifesaving pentavalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine.<\/p>\n

The vaccines, funded by the global Vaccine Alliance, Gavi, were delivered to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare as part of an urgent response to the growing threat in northern Nigeria.<\/p>\n

This was confirmed in a joint statement released on Friday by Gavi, the World Health Organisation, and the United Nations Children’s Fund.<\/p>\n

Health officials say the immunisation drive will focus on those most at risk, targeting people aged between one and twenty nine years.<\/p>\n

This group has borne the brunt of the outbreak, which has already claimed dozens of lives.<\/p>\n

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the country has recorded seven hundred and seven suspected cases of cerebrospinal meningitis, with seventy four deaths reported across twenty two states.<\/p>\n

The case fatality rate currently stands at a concerning nine point two percent.<\/p>\n

The emergency vaccination campaign is set to begin in Kebbi and Sokoto states, where the outbreak has hit hardest.<\/p>\n

There are also plans to extend the rollout to Yobe State as additional vaccine doses become available.<\/p>\n

Health experts believe that the swift deployment of vaccines will help slow the spread of the disease and save lives in vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
