{"id":63710,"date":"2025-04-03T10:13:07","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T10:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=63710"},"modified":"2025-04-03T10:13:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T10:13:07","slug":"tinubu-approves-n20-billion-for-space-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/04\/03\/tinubu-approves-n20-billion-for-space-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu Approves N20 Billion for Space Regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Adenike Lawal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu has approved an initial N20 billion funding for the National Space Research and Development Agency to launch its long-overdue space regulation and licensing initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Matthew Adepoju, the Director-General of the agency, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that despite being mandated by the NASRDA Act of 2010, the agency\u2019s regulatory functions have remained largely dormant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I raised that memo stating that our space can no longer be unregulated, Mr. President graciously approved the take-off fund a few months ago,\u201d Adepoju said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that Nigeria\u2019s space sector operates in three segments: deep space, satellites, and ground stations.<\/p>\n<p>Each requires oversight to ensure compliance and security, preventing potential misuse by unauthorized entities.<\/p>\n<p>Although the approved funds have yet to be disbursed due to bureaucratic constraints, NASRDA is already working on frameworks to enforce regulation.<\/p>\n<p>The licensing platform is now open to both public and private sector players in space-related industries.<\/p>\n<p>Adepoju stressed that without regulation, sensitive geographical intelligence could be exploited by non-state actors.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is expected to strengthen national security, drive economic diversification, and boost revenue from critical sectors such as oil and gas, shipping, and telecommunications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adenike Lawal President Bola Tinubu has approved an initial N20 billion funding for the National Space Research and Development Agency to launch its long-overdue space regulation and licensing initiative.
